How to Add Push Notifications to Your Squarespace Website (Any Plan)
By John Lavine · October 6, 2026 · 6 min read
Squarespace is great for building a beautiful website, but it has no way to send push notifications to your visitors. No setting, no built-in feature, and no simple add-on. Here's why, and how to add real push notifications to any Squarespace site in about ten minutes, on any plan, without touching code.
What push notifications are
A push notification is a short message that pops up on someone's phone lock screen or computer, the same way a text or an app alert does. People only get them after they've said yes, so they reach customers who actually want to hear from you.
For a small business, that means you can say "Fresh batch just came out of the oven" and it shows up on your regulars' phones right away, instead of sitting unread in an inbox.
Does Squarespace have push notifications?
Not for your customers. The Squarespace app can notify you, the site owner, about things like new orders. But there's no way for your website to send notifications to the people who visit it.
The reason is technical. Push notifications need a small background file, called a service worker, hosted at the root of your website. Squarespace doesn't let anyone upload that file, on any plan. Code injection doesn't help either, because it adds code to your pages but can't host the file where it needs to live.
The workaround: give your site its own app page
Since the file can't live on your Squarespace site, zappmeup hosts it for you. Your business gets its own install page on zappmeup.com with your name, logo and colors. Your customers add it to their home screen as an app and turn on notifications from there. You link to it from your Squarespace site, and that's the only change to your website.
Because nothing is added to your Squarespace pages, it works on every Squarespace plan and doesn't affect your site's speed or design.
How to add push notifications to Squarespace, step by step
-
Create your app
Sign up for zappmeup and enter your Squarespace website's address. Your install page is live right away.
-
Brand it
Upload your logo as the app icon and pick your colors, so it looks like your business on customers' home screens.
-
Add a button to your Squarespace site
In Squarespace, open the page you want to edit, click Edit, add a Button block, and paste your install page link. Label it something clear, like "Get our app" or "Get notified of specials".
-
Add it to your menu, too
In the Pages panel, click +, choose Link, and paste the same install link. Now it's on every page of your site.
-
Send your first notification
Once a few customers have installed it, write a short message in your zappmeup dashboard and send it. It lands on their lock screens within seconds.
Tips to get more people to sign up
- Say what's in it for them. "Get first dibs on new products" works better than "Download our app".
- Use your QR code in person. Your dashboard has one. Put it by the register, on receipts or on your menu.
- Mention it in your Squarespace email campaigns. Your email list already likes you, so give them a faster way to hear from you.
- Post the link on social media with a reason to join, like a sign-up-only discount.
Push notifications vs. Squarespace email campaigns
| Email campaign | Push notification | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows up | Inbox, often in a promotions tab | Lock screen |
| Best length | Long: newsletters, stories | One sentence |
| Best for | Monthly updates, big news | Today-only deals, quick alerts |
| Needs an email address | Yes | No |
They work best together: email for the full story, push for "this is happening now".
What iPhone users need to know
iPhones support push notifications from home screen web apps on iOS 16.4 and later. The one catch is that iPhone users have to add the app to their home screen first, using Safari's Share button. Your zappmeup install page walks them through it, and Android users just tap Install.
